"Under the Constitution, the President is commander-in-chief and employs the force. And so we now have the President going out because of this piece of paper and this agreement [Sequestration]. 'I can’t do what I need to do to protect the country,’
"That’s a kind of madness that I haven't seen in a long time."
February 27, 2013
Let’s get a few things straight.
First of all, the concept of blindly slashing the military budget (The Sequestration) belongs to Barack Obama. This was proven beyond a shadow of a doubt by the most honored left wing journalist in the history of man – Bob Woodward, in his book “The Price of Politics.”
Second, Woodward – the lifelong democrat journalist who brought down Richard Nixon -- another corrupt president -- with “the power of the pen,” did call Obama recent actions MADNESS!
Third, regardless what Woodward or any politician or media pundit tells you, Obama’s Military Sequestration Cuts are bad economic policy at time when America needs presidential leadership.
Hear me out…
If you’ve spent any time on Who Stole My Career, you know that I have a deep standing bias against asking the government to hire people to do anything that can be done in the private sector.
It’s not because I hate cops, firefighters, teachers, and soldiers – in fact it’s just the opposite. Many of my best friends work for the government.
I simply don’t trust politicians with my money. They’ve proven over and over again that they’ll “promise the moon” and then take our money and find some way to funnel it back into their reelection coffers.
While I find this to be generally true across all corners of government, some are better than others. Generally local governments are cleaner and more efficient than cities, states, and the feds. Firefighters are better than toll collectors.
When it comes to people who work for the military, I have no such concerns and here’s why:
1. In general, people in the military sign up, serve for 4-6 years and then get out and get on with their lives – more often than not gainfully employed in the private sector.
2. Because so few end up as “lifers,” the taxpayers don’t get stuck paying fat salaries, lifetime healthcare and obscene pensions like they do with other government workers.
3. Most importantly, military personal do not belong to a union. Therefore, there are no mobsters in backrooms forcing soldiers to pay dues that can then be laundered back into political donations.
This enables presidents to ramp up the standing military and scale it back in a relative short period of time. I’m constantly amazed at how many democrats know all the details about Clinton’s so-called budget surplus, but have no idea how he did it.
Very few Americans know that between 1992 and 2000, he cut national defense by more than half a million troops and slashed $50 billion in inflation-adjusted dollars. The Army alone lost four active divisions and two Reserve divisions. The number of total active personnel in the Air Force was decreased by nearly 30 percent. In the Navy, the total number of ships has decreased from around 393 ships in the fleet in 1992 to 316 today. Even the Marines have dropped 22,000 personnel (source).
Many experts believe that these deep military cuts combined with Clinton’s lack or response to the terrorist attacks on the USS Cole and Egypt Air 990 emboldened Al Qaeda and set the stage for the September 11, 2001 attacks.
#1 – Increased Tax Revenue Risk
Although Obama’s tax-the-rich mantra may sound like the personification of fairness, it is actually a very risky way to fund a government.
In 2009, the 20% of all wage earners paid a whopping 94.1% of all income taxes. In January of this year, Obama pushed through another tax increase on workers making more than $450,000/year.
In addition, there is a 20% bump in Capital Gains taxes on the rich kicking in this year to help fund Obamacare, so by 2014, we may well wake up and discover that the rich pay over 95% of all taxes in America.
If you like Obama you may be say “that sounds fair to me.” To me, only God almighty knows what’s fair and what’s not. What I do know is that this economically very risky.
First off, it’s risky because it depends on very small slice of the population to generate virtually all the tax revenue.
Secondly, and more importantly, the wages of the wealthy are actually very volatile and unlike broad based taxes that everyone pays, they can disappear overnight in the event of a national emergency.
Take the attacks of 9/11, which I just mentioned followed a drastic cut in military spending. According to The Institute For The Analysis of Global Security, the economic losses associated with the 9/11 attacks exceeded $2 trillion.
These losses translated directly a to stock market loss, which means no capital gain tax payments and capital losses to offset taxes in other categories; all of which adds billions to the national deficit.
So when Obama blindly slashes the military budget and ignores the Al Qaeda attack on our Embassy in Benghazi, he’s flirting with the same high-risk policies that preceded the 9/11 attacks.
#2 – It Kills Good Taxpaying Jobs
I don’t know if you’ve looked around lately, but there aren’t a whole lot of good paying jobs left in America.
Most of the Automotive and Industrial Manufacturing jobs have been chased offshore by oppressive labor unions.
Obama constant harassment of his favorite boogey man “those Wall Street Fat Cats,” along with the extremely overbearing Dodd/Frank Law, has pretty much frozen hiring in traditional financial services.
And soon Obamacare will put a cap on what our top doctors can earn in Healthcare.
But we have always had the good old American Defense Industry to hold up the technical end of our engineering and manufacturing job market. In fact, according to the Aerospace Industries Association, jobs this industry accounted for over 3.5 million jobs in America in 2010 and these jobs paid an average of over $80,000/year – double the national average.
AIA projects that Sequestration will ultimately cost these industries 352,000 jobs and an $86 billion hit on the GDP.
Consider the deficit impact when these 350,000 high paid workers go on unemployment for 99 weeks and start collecting food stamps?
#3 -- Defense Products Are America’s #1 Exports
Unlike virtually any other high tech market, defense products can be profitably sold outside the US for decades after they’ve become technically obsolete here at home.
Over a hundred nations have an air force, but only a few have the technology to produce a multi-million dollar fighter jet. The US Defense industry competes very favorably with England, France, Russia, China, and Israel for this business. The same can be said for military transport vehicles, ships, and small ordnance.
In fact, US Defense exports are America’s #1 industry in terms of the balance of trade; exporting $42 billion more than we import each year (source).
Obama loves to cry about jobs going overseas, but here’s an industry that keeps jobs here in America and he decided slashing 350,000 jobs was the best way to cut his bloated $3.8 trillion budget.
#4 – It Was All So Unnecessary
Obama’s popularity numbers have started to tank again. Some say it because of the lies about shutting down the White House tours, but I think it’s because people are starting to realize that he has zero leadership skills and doesn’t seem to care!
Cutting spending isn’t fun and it isn’t easy, but it’s not impossible. Every successful business in America does it from time to time and so do most families. It’s almost inconceivable to imagine someone being so immature that they actually cannot find anything to cut in a $3.8 trillion spending plan that has grown over 25% in just 3 years.
Inconceivable, unless you’re talking about a man who never worked in the private sector, never managed a budget, in fact, never managed anyone before he became President of The United States.
The good news is that we do have a few leaders left in Washington DC. You may have never heard about them – because they are Republicans and they’re doing their job, something the media can’t bring themselves to report.
A group of conservative republicans did the hard work of picking over the nations spending an identifying $2.5 trillion in spending cuts (over 10 years) that can be made without slashing the military.
These cuts are probably not “painless,” but they far less painful than the ones Obama came up with. You can click here to read a summary of the bill (H.R. 408).
But here are a few turds I know we could have cut before we touched the military:
Sorry, but when this PORK is still in Obama’s spending plan – he’s done nothing to cut spending!
And when Obama stands in front of the camera and says we have to stop inspecting food, cut off aid to disabled children, pull an aircraft carrier out of the middle east, and close White House tours because of Sequestration, while still squandering taxpayer money on Egypt, Amtrak, and NPR, he’s complete failure as a leader!
#5 -- Our All Volunteer Military Deserves Better!
Our nation is free for one reason – we have the finest military on earth.
They accomplish virtually every mission we ask them to do and when things go wrong, it’s almost always due to politicians sticking their noses where they don’t belong.
In the last decade, we asked our brave men and women to do more than simply win battles; we’ve also told them to be the first line of US Diplomacy in a war zone! And they have delivered.
Unlike our adversaries, we enjoy and all-volunteer armed forces that serve for a very modest wage and do so without a whimper.
And that’s what makes Obama’s cut to Military Tuition Assistance Program so despicable! To save piddling $6 million, Obama snuffed out the dreams of 300,000 brave young and women serving their country.
While $6 million sounds like a lot of money to you and me, keep in mind that in Obama’s world it’s a mere pittance. Consider one report that shows the Obama’s have squandered over $20 million of taxpayer money on Hawaiian vacations alone.
This brings me to most obscene spending spree in the Obama administration – squandering taxpayer money pandering for Hispanic votes, while screwing the troops who defend our nation (the image at the top this story).
I’ll bet you’ve never visited the web site www.collegescholarships.org. If you did, you’d find an entire page dedicated to FREE PROGRAMS funded by the federal budget to pay for college for Hispanics.
If you scroll down the page you’ll come to a section titled:
The Federal Government provides grants for colleges that specifically serve the Hispanic community. Hispanic-serving colleges are defined as those schools, which have student bodies that are comprised of at least one quarter Hispanic Americans. These institutions are concentrated in California, Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, New York and New Jersey.
Hispanic-serving colleges in California:
Basically it’s saying that Obama’s federal government is pouring taxpayer money into colleges that have a student body made up of 25% Hispanic or more.
I suspect you’ve heard of “The Dream Act?” It’s a beautiful idea, sold by bleeding heart liberals to protect the innocent children of illegal aliens – even if these children are in the 30’s.
Although it never got through Congress, Obama has ignored the rule of law and told his Border Agents and Immigration Officers to release any suspected illegal aliens who utters the three words “I’m a Dreamer.”
But wait, it gets worse. Several liberal states have taken it upon themselves to implement their own Dream Act – first and foremost California.
California just passed a state wide Dream Act providing both deeply discounted and free college tuition to illegal aliens funded through Obama’s federal grants listed above.
The San Jose Mercury News reported on March 8, 2013 that 20,000 illegal aliens had already signed up for these grants.
Who’s Looking Out For Who?
Sequester has come and gone. Hundreds of thousands of defense workers will lose their jobs. Members of the military will lose their tuition assistance, Obama will jet off for weekends of golf with Tiger Woods and 20,000 illegal aliens will have their college tuition paid by us.
Ponder this fact for a moment…
